It hasn’t been the easiest season of BravoTV’s hit show “Ladies Of London” for some of the cast. But Caroline Fleming seems to always come out on top! The Baroness arranged a cast trip to her home country of Denmark filmed for the show, where she and co-stars Caroline Stanbury, Sophie Stanbury, Juliet Angus, Julie Montagu, Marissa Hermer, and Stanbury’s make-up artist BFF Luke Henderson stayed at her castle Valdemars on the island of Taasinge.
So with a background and pedigree like Caroline Fleming’s…..what are her favorite places to visit at home in Denmark?
“I would always recommend Tivoli,” Caroline told The Daily Dish. “Beautiful gardens with a fantastic amusement park and the most magical Christmas fair.” Caroline isn’t kidding. If you want to have a good time in Denmark’s capital city of Copenhagen, look no further than Tivoli, where, in addition to the amusement park rides and lush garden retreats from the big city, you’ll find everything from theatrical performancesto restaurants to shops. As Caroline mentioned, this time of year may just be the best time to visit Tivoli as its Christmas attractions kick off November 14 and run through January 3, which will include a holiday-themed lightshow, parade, and other performances. When it starts to look a lot like Christmas at Tivoli, you’ll wish it would never end.
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
If you’re an art lover, Caroline recommends Lousiana, a modern art museum located 25 miles north of Copenhagen. Though Louisiana was founded in 1958 as a showcase for Danish modern art, the museum now has a permanent collection of more than 3,500 pieces from around the world including works from the likes of Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, and Ai Weiwei. The breathtaking grounds, Sculpture Park, and panoramic view of Sweden across the sound make the Louisiana complex a work of art in and of itself.
“Nyhavn is a wonderful port with lots of charming restaurants,” Caroline told The Daily Dish. And that’s not an understatement. With multi-colored buildings along an artificial canal filled with boats, Nyhavn looks like something out of a painting. Close by is Caroline’s favorite restaurant Geist, where you can get a wide variety of yummy small plates, which probably made your mouth water when they were featured at the eatery where Annabelle Neilson let each of her Ladies of London castmates have it earlier this season. Hopefully, your dinner at Geist will be much more pleasant.
Top Dog founder Marissa Hermer isn’t the only Ladies of London cast member that knows about hot dogs. If you’re looking for some more authentic Danish cuisine, Caroline also recommends seeking out any sausage wagon, known as a “pølsevogn”in Denmark “for fantastic and very Danish hot dogs.” No matter what your background is, nothing ever really beats street food.
Today, Amalienborg, a massive royal palace built in the 1750s, is basically a museum dedicated to the Danish royal family, which includes reconstructions of rooms of the palace as members of royalty had used them, artifacts, and clothing on display. “Amalienborg Palace is where the royal family have residence for parts of the year,” Caroline told The Daily Dish, also adding that her close friend and the godmother of her daughter Josephine, Crown Princess Mary, lives in the palace. “This is a very beautiful attraction.”
Ida Davidsen is another favorite food spot of Caroline’s. “Go to Ida Davidsen for the classic open Danish sandwiches,” she told The Daily Dish. The luncheonette serves more than 250 of these open-faced sandwiches known as “smørrebrød” in Danish. You might want to do yourself a favor and figure out what you’re going to order before you go.
Of course, no trip to Denmark would be complete without a visit to Caroline’s family home Valdemars Slot, which we received a grand tour of on Ladies of London. The opulent interior coupled with the picturesque grounds seen on the show should be enough to book your next plane ticket to Denmark. If not, the possibility of feeling as glamorous as Caroline for a day should be motivation enough.
