#ApresSki RECAP: When Elise Made it About Race, She Lost the Group….

ew

Last night’s episode of #ApresSki took a u-turn that turned off MANY viewers. Since the descent into racism occurred during the episode I have no choice but to recap the events in my blog. A dinner conversation between the cast turned ugly when Operations Manager Elise Wims reprimanded Bobby Crowder’s butler assignment to Kendra Larkin as racist move. Watch below:

How do you come back from your manager insinuating you had racial motivations when tasking a co-worker with being a butler? Every member of the Gibbons Life team has been a butler, but when the woman of color gets the job it’s because she is black? That is bullshit. Bobby Crowder wanted to work with his best-friend Charlotte-end of story. Both had felt Kendra Larkin had been too bossy with them last week when she was in charge and told her so politely. In comes as no surprise that when it’s Bobby’s turn to head-up the team he chose Charlotte to be his partner, and Kendra to do the “concierge” one-on-one service with the client. EVERYONE on the team is in service to the whims/desires of the client-color plays ZERO in those qualification. By throwing out the “race” card Elise has made it impossible for her team to trust her and has created a hazardous work environment. She owes everyone at the table (Bobby, Charlotte, Lynsey, and Kendra) an apology for her comments. Perhaps she is forgetting Bobby Crowder also comes from a minority population as a gay male? I don’t believe it will be possible for Elise to continue managing operations for Gibbon’s Life after her outbursts. No employer can risk having the lawsuits from employees over an unsafe work environment, even on Reality TV!

Kendra Larkin and I had a conversation on Twitter last night, and I appreciate her view point. It’s a great reminder for Elise and the rest of us to remember we all have different experiences that shape our thoughts. Sometimes the most innocent statement can be taken to the darkest place. We all need to hear each other out before resorting to angry outbursts and labeling.

Charlotte Fenton had this to say about Elise Wims’ comments to Bravo

“Bravotv.com: What is your take on the whole “butler” argument?

CF: The racial component of the butler argument was shocking, totally unnecessary, and extremely hurtful. Bobby and I both walked away from it feeling gutted. To insinuate that Kendra was picked for the role due to her skin colour is absolutely ludicrous. For what it’s worth, I also have two degrees but still work my ass off as the assistant. I literally never complained about what jobs I had to do once. The term “butler” in this context is totally colour/cultural neutral and similar to the roles played by Bobby for Kiki and her friends.

I feel horrible if both Kendra and Elise genuinely felt that Bobby made his decision based on skin colour. I know and can say from the bottom of my heart that this was not the case. He 100% based his decision on the fact that I am his best friend and we stick together as much as we can. Canada may well have a unique multicultural perspective, but that is irrelevant in this case where sadly it seems to me that Elise is burdened with a pre-existing victim complex and clearly additionally has no knowledge of Canadian societal standards.”

Bravotv.com: When Kendra was telling Elise about the dinner with the rest of the team, were you surprised by how upset she was?

Charlotte Fenton: I was honestly shocked to see how upset Kendra was when she was downloading to Elise what happened the previous night. I think being an only child might have something to do with this. It seems as though the tiniest bit of constructive criticism hits her really hard. Bobby told her he felt a bit bossed around by her, not that he was planning on stealing her first unborn child.

I do wonder why Elise Wims is on #ApresSki?? She’s already a Reality Star! Perhaps that’s where her attitude comes from? She’s been on “Hell’s Kitchen 2011” NBC’s “Food Fighters 2014” and has her own website >>http://www.elisethedivachef.com/  Now we know where Wims learned how to be dramatic and get rewarded for it, welcome to BravoTV (Owned by NBC your former employer!)

  1. I have learned that prejudice will always exist. Yes, it has gotten better, but unfortunately it does still live on. I have also learned that some people are unaware of how their comments affect others. they have never had to be. it doesn’t affect them. What I find interesting here is that Bobby received a hug for offending Kendra and Elise was reprimanded for defending her. Unless you experience it, you don’t know. However subtle it is, it still hurts and leaves you feeling less than. And that’s exactly what Bobby said. He would never have his BFF doing that kind if work. It seemed as if he felt that she was too good for it. Happens all the time.

    • Elise called Bobby a racist in public and as his manager for a slight that did not exist. That is grounds for termination here in California. If she felt Chowder’s comments were inappropriate she should have addressed him privately. Elise turned it into a situation about race-period.

We have all had bosses we have felt we were more competent than. We just give them evil looks and talk about them behind their back! However, I have never seen a group of workers treat their boss with such a lack of respect, as these group of people do. I do feel this has something to do with her being a black woman. They didn’t respect her from the get go. Hence, why they felt they could talk to her, their BOSS, any kind of way.

Additionally, they treated Kendra like a step child and didn’t include her in anything, yet she’s deemed bossy, when they are ALL demanding when in charge.

Overall, this show leaves a bad taste in my mouth due to its real world racist undertones. Additionally, I understand that some people just WON’T and will never GET IT.

Bobby coming from a minority-lifestyle community it seems he would be more understanding with Kendra and Elise being newcomers to the ski world. Granted we all want to work with our besties but if Bobby always wants to work with Char, how does that include Kendra? (Hot tubs are kinda gross) She is always last to be picked for the kickball team. When she worked by herself and everyone came in laughing/bonding, did not want to help her and then called her bossy, it was quite a reach. Nice people, who are a team may have re-capped their event, stated they were a bit tired from the day but still asked if there was anything that they can do to help. I wonder why it came off bossy. I have seen them talk with each other the same way. The other team members are rude. They roll their eyes when Elise speaks, take large deep breaths, talk back which I have never seen with Tamara. Perhaps Elise can wear a flannel sometimes. If they were nice, caring people they could jokingly, professionally suggest a shop trip to get her Whistler-fied. When you are a brown person walking into a different culture and a group of mostly white people it is extremely difficult because you have to fight very hard to not be what others expect of you or think of your race. I feel if the group were more respectful and inclusive there would not be any feelings of racism, but they are not. Bobby was a great butler first episode and did not refer to it as “low-level”, he did a great job why not do it again if it is a team effort making Gibbons Life the best experience for the guest why not do it again. He made about himself and friendship, not the company. Kudos to the teammate that took Elise skiing, that was a beautiful effort and how the entire world she reach out and get to know people beyond surface level…many of us humans are so dynamic!!

  4. I lreally like kendra , she’s such a sweetheart and I love the rest of the cast but Elise has a lot to learn about management…they just need to fire her ass.. I do not like her management style at all .. the TEAM works their asses off and she is to self absorbed to see it ..she does not listen to what the clients want and I think some cross training would do her some good ..that and a dose of humility ..

  5. Really? Elise is a racist bully as well as Conundrum the Butler! So this is soooooo scripted or pathetic or both. Goodbye, Elise. Adios, Kendra .

  6. I’m a black woman, and I agree that the accusation of racism by Elise crossed the line. I think “you’re racist” gets thrown around way too often and its overuse hurts black people most of all just like crying wolf hurt the sheep herding boy. That said, I was thoroughly appalled by Bobby’s open acknowledgment that he favorited Charlotte in deciding who would be the butler. In my place of work proclaiming to your boss, no less, that you gave the least desirable work to someone because they are not your bff is a fireable offense in and of itself – I don’t care what skin color is involved. I don’t understand why more people aren’t aghast by his behavior It was so unprofessional and downright juvenile.

Not only should you not practice, let alone admit, favoritism based on your personal feelings in the work place, from my reading of their titles Charlotte is a “concierge assistant” and Bobby and Kendra are both fullblown concierges. 1. It is almost always the assistant in any team is given the lowest level tasks because they are working their way up the ladder. (Unless of course, they are either sleeping with or otherwise have a personal hold on their manager.) 2. I’ve watched all 3 episodes and I haven’t seen Charlotte do much of anything except make faces, suggest places to go that you could find with a quick google search (I go to Whistler all the time and I knew those places – and I’m po), stand around, bitch to the camera, sit in the hot tub and shrug off work she doesn’t want to do b/c she is friends with Bobby. Kendra may have made some relatively big mistakes, but she is working; she served the clients with a smile even though she was upset by being given the most menial task on the team. So, no – it wasn’t Kendra’s “turn” to be a servant. If anything it was definitely Charlotte’s. So, um, let’s see – Charlotte the assistant – gets to act like a peer and not do menial tasks. Kendra – who is a peer – is being treated like an assistant all because Charlotte has a personal relationship with another concierge. That is messed up.

I’ll end my rant though by saying that Elise’s management is almost as appalling as Bobby’s behavior. She missed an opportune moment to firmly and without rancor put Bobby in his place and let him know that his favoritism was unprofessional and unacceptable. In fact, if I were their manager, I would separate Bobby and Charlotte in teams going forward. Instead, she acted juvenile herself and gave Bobby a weapon to turn around and play the “victim” himself. Mismanagement 101.

She had an opportune moment to put Bobby in his place by letting him know firmly – but without rancor – that his favoritism was unprofessional, rude and unacceptable; that it would not be tolerated again and she would be watching to see it doesn’t happen again. In fact, if I were their manager, I would separate Bobby and Charlotte going forward. Instead, she gave him the perfect weapon to turn his own idiotic actions back on her and let him be the “victim.” Mismanagement 101.

    • Most of these people issues could be fixed by a strong manager. That’s what they need to guide and train them. Wims has been planted by the producers with zero management experience. She’s a chef, not an executive manager.

  8. What you need to understand is that as a person who is not a minority, you need to be aware of how certain things you say can come across as offensive to others. Did Bobby mean that in the way that Elise said? No, but what she said wasn’t wrong. It was an offensive and ignorant comment. And, for the record, I am not a minority.
